Hampton is situated along the Musconetcong River and was settled in the 1800’s. The area was first incorporated in 1895 as Junction Borough by an Act of the New Jersey State Legislature. The area had been part of Lebanon and Bethlehem Townships.

In 1909, the Borough name was changed to Hampton Borough. Junction Borough received its name because of the multiple railroad lines that crossed in the Borough.
