French Drain or Surface Drain for Basement Waterproofing

By now, you probably know that basement waterproofing involves much more than installing a waterproofing membrane on the outside surface of the foundation wall. For waterproofing to be effective, it should consist of a system that works together to keep the basement dry. A drainage system is a critical part of a waterproofing system.

Drainage systems are vital in basement waterproofing. While the waterproofing membrane helps to keep water out of the basement, the drainage system prevents water from collecting around the basement. It helps to reduce hydrostatic pressure against the basement walls and therefore prevent damage to the basement walls. The drainage system also protects the basement from flooding.

When installing a basement waterproofing system, your contractor will provide you with options for different drainage systems. Below we discuss French drains and surface drains.

French Drains

French drains are a popular drainage solution for waterproofing basements. They are especially popular in areas where the water table is high. These drains are designed to collect water that accumulates below the surface of the soil. This means that these drains collect water that the soil has absorbed or that is rising through the ground, such as is the case with high water tables.

The installation of a French drain involves digging a trench along the foundation. A perforated pipe is placed into the channel and covered with rock and crushed pebbles. The soil is then backfilled over the drain. This French drain may also be installed inside the basement. Water from the surrounding soil seeps into the drain through the perforated pipe and is channeled away from the basement.

Surface Drains

As the name suggests, surfaceyard drainage new jersey 4 drains are designed to collect water that accumulates on the surface of the landscape. They are installed right on the outside of the basement walls on the surface of the landscape. They are an ideal solution for those that have a lot of water collecting right against their foundation. They will help to prevent the pooling of water against the foundation. These drains are also a great choice when you have a yard that slopes toward your foundation.

Surface drains are constructed with a metal grating flush with the ground surface. A flexible PVC pipe may also be installed into the drain. Installing a surface drain is much easier than installing French drains. This is because excavation is not required. The installation process is also less technical than with a French drain.

Which Drain Is Better

Both French drains and surface drains work to protect foundations from the effects of run off and flood water. There are several factors that ought to be considered when choosing a drainage solution for your home. However, we often recommend a combination of both drain styles. This ensures maximum protection for your foundation.
